We introduce a repository of the teachings of our late beloved Bible teacher Mr. Harold Camping.
Mr. Camping was a diligent student of the Bible for over 50 years, during which time many doctrines of the church were examined and successfully challenged using the Bible, alone and in its entirety, as the source book of truth.
Doctrines such as marriage and divorce (what God hath joined together, let not man put asunder), the nature of Judgment (annihilation vs. eternal suffering), the danger of any kind of a works-grace gospel (salvation is 100% the work of God Alone, we can do nothing), God Himself being the Author of the entire Bible down to every letter of every word, Christ speaking in parables, and the Bible being its own interpreter, were all part of the evolution and emphasis of Mr. Camping’s teaching through the years, and particularly emphasized in his years-long study in the book of Jeremiah.
Mr. Camping's ministry was characterized by an intense desire to be faithful altogether to the word of God, and the authority of the Bible over that of the churches, which often placed him at odds with the churches. Indeed his study of the Bible led to the conclusion that God is no longer utilizing the churches as the custodian of the Bible and that God is only using individual believers to bring about the salvation of the elect.
One of the products that came out of Mr. Camping’s lifelong study of the Bible was the development of the timeline of history, beginning with creation in 11,013 B.C. and eventually extending to the year 2,011 A.D., which he believed would be the year that Christ would literally appear to bodily resurrect the believers and bring God’s magnificent salvation plan to an end. Mr. Camping believed that May 21, 2011 would be the date that Christ would return and the believers would receive their resurrected, spiritual bodies. When that did not occur, thereafter for a brief 5-month period (Revelation 9:5,10) Mr. Camping entertained the notion that judgment day was entirely spiritual with the believers remaining on this sin-cursed earth in their sin-cursed mortal bodies, and without the possibility of salvation for anyone who was not already saved prior to May 21, 2011. However, when October 21, 2011 passed without incident, Mr. Camping acknowledged that our understanding of the timing of the end was yet incomplete and that the no-more-salvation doctrine was bankrupt, so that from that time forward until his death in 2013, he emphasized that salvation was indeed possible outside the churches right to the last day.
Unfortunately, there are still those today who continue to teach the no-more-salvation false doctrine, who also promote Mr. Camping’s teaching prior to October 21, 2011 in an effort to lend credence to their man-made false teaching. They fail to recognize that the Bible is the authority, not man, a fact that Mr. Camping himself humbly acknowledged throughout his ministry, but never so much so as in his final months after October 21, 2011. God is in charge of salvation and the Bible insists that salvation goes right to the last day when we see Christ appearing on the clouds of Glory. Those that believe otherwise will have a rude awakening on the last day as they witness the bodily resurrection of those who they thought were beyond the hope of salvation.
Therefore, in introducing these studies, it is crucial to recognize that the Bible is the final authority and that our understanding of the timing and character of the end was yet incomplete during these studies. Time has an end, and it is incumbent upon us to approach the Bible with an attitude of fear and trembling as we study these things and look to God in prayer to reveal to us what he wishes for us to know concerning the end.
The role of the Bible teacher is to point us to Christ who is the hope of our salvation, which is not a vain or an empty hope. It is a substantive hope continuing to the very end. Our understanding of the Bible, while greatly enhanced in these last days as God is revealing more and more truth, is nevertheless imperfect until we see Christ face to face. We are 100% dependent on God to reveal truth. Therefore as we continue to study these things, may God cause us to walk ever so humbly with an attitude, I don’t know anything, Lord, you teach me, Jesus Christ Himself being our supreme example.
